Introduction

After having thyroidectomy surgery and radioactive iodine therapy to treat my thyroid cancer, doctors dropped the bombshell on me that I now needed 5 weeks of radiotherapy. Having written a blog of my experience of the radioactive iodine treatment, I decided to continue and write up my experience of the radiotherapy treatment too.

So here we go:-

My particular treatment was a dose of radiotherapy every day, 5 days a week (Monday to Friday) for 5 weeks.

Because the radiotherapy was on my neck, they needed to mould a mask/restraint which covered my head, neck and shoulders to hold me perfectly still and aligned in the same position for each treatment. For treatment on other parts of the body I gather little tattoos are used to align you, but because of the need for the 'mask', these markers are placed on the mask instead.

Tom and Ros were my 'moulders' who proved to be very compassionate and gentle. After filling out the consent forms and having my photo taken holding a card with my ID number on it like a criminal, the moulding process started.
